Between 1990s and early 2000s, especially in the South Asian countries’ cinema circuit, there was a flurry of films portraying henpecked (or not) husbands as objects of ridicule—‘Gharwali Baharwali’, ‘Biwi No 1’ among others. Despite the condescending tone and blatant flippantness, those movies went on to become sleeper hits. A) That time was different, and B) Macho men, and all men in general, were, finally, taken off the pedestal.

Now, take that exact shtick—add a dash of headache-inducing selfless love frequency—and plant it in a modern context. That’s Zee Zindagi’s original series ‘Mrs. & Mr. Shameem’ in a nutshell. And to think that director Kashif Nisar would derive and rehash a bunch of ideas from different other—and far better—movies and series’ from the genre is appalling. A hot-headed, highly entitled 20-something YO Umaina gets pregnant after her conventional idea of a ‘man’ leaves her for an inflated bank account. Frankly, you want to sympathise with the character when she is tossed around and turned away from one door to another. But, boy… do some people make it hard! Her poor treatment of that one character who sticks it out with her—Shameem, the hero—only evokes anger and disgust. How could the primary figure, who is not a tad bit original, have absolutely no real sense of how the unforgiving world functions—Kareena Kapoor Khan as Geet in ‘Jab We Met’, Sonam K Ahuja in ‘Ranjhanaa’; we have seen it all!
