StoryLine:
The movie, a noble attempt, falls short of being a really good one as it left some very important questions unanswered.What will you do if you find R ab i n d r a n at h Tagore’s Nobel Prize lying in your backyard? If you are an illiterate farmer like Bhanu (Mithun Chakraborty), chances are you will not recognize it and consider it a hefty piece of gold. Bhanu reacts the way he’s expected to – there’s confusion, temptation, fear and at last a spurt of common sense – which takes him to the village schoolteacher (Soumitra Chatterjee) for much-needed advice. Bhanu, in dreams of returning the treasure to the chief minister and getting a big reward – which he will use for village welfare – embarks on a journey to Kolkata. The city promptly becomes the cause of his disillusionment and with the help of Hari (Saswata) and his wife, Monu (Sudipta Chakraborty), he decides to sell the treasure just to provide a better life to his family and village. In the process, he has a run-in with the money-hungry lot. His innocence gets butchered by a heartless city as the story takes a new twist.
This movie has a story which could be told simply. But the effort that the director makes to weave a fictional tale from an incident that created international headlines takes a turn from being simple to melodramatic and ultimately mediocre. The premise is interesting but the glaring contrast between plush city existence and slowly rotting village life may at first seem quite apt, but it soon becomes clichéd.
