StoryLine:

2500 years ago, in India, Siddhartha was born as a prince of the Shakya clan, but he gives up his position as a prince to see the world. He meets a strange boy named Assaji, who can predict the future, a monk with only one eye and Depa. Siddhartha continues traveling. Second Buddha movie from Tezuka Productions.Basically what these two movies do is get rid of 90% of the plot and squeeze the rest together in an hour and a half each, stripping it of any weight, solemnity or importance, and even context, and replacing Tezuka’s iconic artstyle and steady pacing with generic anime visuals and flow. Why this was even conceived escapes me completely.This is really bad. Characters pop up out of nowhere and some of the animated sequences are laughably terrible. For about 10 minutes I was thinking this must be from a different film because that section had nothing to with the film I had been watching for the previous hour. Wouldn’t say these two adaptions of the Tezuka manga would be a good way to introduce someone to Buddha’s life story.Almost everything from my review of the previous Buddha film also applies here. Ultimately, the goal of an adaptation should either be to provide a substitute for it’s source material (for those that don’t want to read the manga in this case), or to provide a new experience that it’s source would’ve been incapable of providing. This does neither of those things. Despite being skimmed down and abridged versions, both of these films together only manage to retell about half of the original manga, and even then it only sticks to the most basic plot elements and leaves out smaller events.
