Jill Adams (Gina Rodriguez) finishes her night shift and is shown dealing drugs. She drives to pick her son Noah and daughter Matilda up from their grandmother Doris but falls asleep in the car. She is awoken by her daughter and the three drive off. Suddenly their car is hit and it rolls into a lake. Matilda nearly drowns and the police reveal that all the power and cars are malfunctioning. As they get to the hospital they find everything is in chaos and coma patients are revealed to finally be awake. The three go back to Doris’s house and she kindly lets them stay the night. Jill tries to sleep but cannot so she meditates.Awake 2021.
Doris reveals she tried yoga but it didn’t help her. Noah tells Jill he can’t sleep either. He notices shooting stars but Jill points out that they’re satellites. Jill goes to work and on her way there she sees that the whole neighborhood is awake. At work psychiatrist Murphy (Jennifer Jason Lee) lets Jill know that all technology is out. She discusses with her colleague what happens when the human body doesn’t get adequate sleep. Symptoms of disease are also appearing at twice the rate and the world will be plunged into pure chaos. There are also no unconscious people, everyone is either awake or dead. However is one woman who can sleep and Jill remembers that Matilda can sleep. Jill rushes home to find Matilda and finds out she’s at church. The pastor discusses with Matilda his dark past with drugs, he nearly died but he felt like he was like Jesus because he was given a second chance at life. He wants to pray with Matilda, giving thanks for the fact that she can sleep. Jill doesn’t want Matilda to go to the hub. The pastor gives a sermon about Matilda being a beacon of hope and people want to sacrifice her. Jill and Noah arrive to take her away but Doris doesn’t want to give her up.
