Tokyo Vice is a crime drama created by J.T. Rogers based on the 2009 book of the same name by Jake Adelstein that premiered on April 7, 2022, on HBO Max. He succeeds in becoming their first foreign-born journalist and starts at the very bottom. Taken under the wing of a veteran detective in the vice squad, he starts to explore the dark and dangerous world of the Japanese yakuza.Tokyo Vice was initially set up as a movie in 2013, with Daniel Radcliffe attached to star as Adelstein. Anthony Mandler was set to direct, and development was advanced enough to where a production start of mid-2014 was set.[4] In June 2019, the project was re-purposed as a television series, receiving an 8 episode straight to series order by WarnerMedia to stream on their streaming service HBO Max. Ansel Elgort was set to executive produce the series, with J. T. Rogers writing and Destin Daniel Cretton directing the series.[5] In October 2019, Michael Mann was hired to direct the pilot episode and also serve as an executive producer of the series.

The series premiered on April 7, with the first three episodes available immediately, followed by two episodes on a weekly basis until the season finale on April 28, 2022.One of the best things about the Golden Age of Television—this was just before the streaming era—was when they’d get a ‘name’ director to helm the pilot episode, to set a visual and stylistic template for the rest of the show to follow. Martin Scorsese famously helmed the first episode of Boardwalk Empire, and the team behind Succession is still trying to mimic the distinct style Adam McKay brought to his pilot. Now, it is the turn of Michael Mann, who has returned over half-a-decade after his feature film Blackhat infamously bombed at the box office, to direct the pilot of HBO Max’s Tokyo Vice. And what a pilot it is.
