Elizabeth Holmes (Amanda Seyfried) being deposed in 2017, shortly after she was indicted on charges of defrauding investors in her medical testing company Theranos. The Dropout Season 1 Download.
When a “techbro” has screwed over so many people, either by shady business practices, sexual harassment, or outright fraud, it’s hard to see them given the biographical series treatment. Why romanticize their life or how they built their businesses if they made so many people suffer? After we see Holmes, wearing her signature black turtleneck and bright red lipstick, giving a tour of Theranos and some really weird answers to questions like “What kind of food would you be? (“Green juice!,” she says enthusiastically), we flash back first to her childhood, then to 2001. That’s when Holmes, who lives in Houston is about to attend Stanford and study chemical engineering. But first she was going to go to China and immerse herself in the school’s Mandarin program.
It’s right after her father Chris (Michael Gill), an executive at Enron, found out that the company went belly up amid fraud charges. Her mother Noel (Elizabeth Marvel), is just as tough on her husband as she is on Elizabeth, insisting to Chris that he borrow money from Richard Fuisz (William H. Macy), a doctor and entrepreneur whom Chris thinks is more huckster than businessman. As the family comes to visit Fusiz and his wife Lorraine (Mary Lynn Rajskub), Fusiz fumes that pretty much the entire Holmes family thinks they’re smarter than he is, Elizabeth included. The next summer, Elizabeth announces to her mother that she intends on becoming sexually active, starting with the immersion trip to Beijing. In China, she meets Sunny Balwani (Naveen Andrews), participating in the program despite being 20 years older than anyone else there and having already sold a company for millions. He’s the only one who’s impressed that she wants to speak in Mandarin, even among the other students. In a montage, we see them becoming close friends.
