The Boss Baby: Back in the Crib is the latest addition to the titular franchise. Based on the children’s book by Marla Frazee, the DreamWorks Animation film quickly became a success — debuting in 2017 and quickly leading to a sequel, an interactive special, and two television series. During an exclusive interview with CBR ahead of The Boss Baby: Back in the Crib’s May 19 premiere on Netflix, Executive Producer Brandon Sawyer spoke about building on the events of the theatrical films to create a major step forward for the series. He also addressed what makes the series so endearing to audiences and what’s changed the most about working as a writer in the world of western animation. Brandon Sawyer: It came out of just answering the most fundamental question of, you know, Teddy’s not a baby anymore. He’s an adult, and we know that this device — we’d seen kind of a rough cut of The Boss Baby: Family Business when we were developing this — so we knew that there was this device in there that could get him back to the baby world. So, honestly, it just came out of that first question of what would make him do that? Why would he be a baby again?That somehow led to us in the writer’s room [to] what if we frame them for a crime? The minute that idea came out, it was just… Everything clicked. It makes this fantastic family dynamic where they have to let him in even though we hope it ends the household. It was just really fun to see how much fun and how far we can stretch that in a show.
