StoryLine:

Miki Anderson returns to her hometown in the Australian High Country, where her brother and family still live, after ten years in prison for accidentally killing a friend while a teenager. The plant employs asylum seekers or refugees on a government scheme in poor conditions, and the owner Kevin Pattison, son of the mayor, is secretly planning to sell up and move to South East Asia with his wife. One of the workers, Jamila, is concerned with her sister Laila’s extensive absence while her husband believes she ran off with a lover. A rights activist, Hugh Lang, confronts Pattison about the labor conditions. As a prank, a snide employee, Nick, fakes friendliness and then locks Miki in a freezer with animal carcasses after her shift. She escapes, and sees the dead body of Lang, who is revealed to be the father of the girl she killed ten years ago. She flees the plant to her estranged mother’s home.Lynne insists that Miki not reveal that she saw the dead body of Lang at the abattoir, and remains distant towards her daughter. Miki returns to work, finding the scene of the murder scrubbed clean and the security footage wiped. She is convinced to attend a town celebration, where Colleen blames her for her husband’s disappearance. Jamila asks Senior Sgt. Bill Kirby for help finding Laila, but he claims unavailability due to the festival. Three town teenagers, one of which is Kevin’s daughter, Ivy, get high and joyride in Lang’s abandoned vehicle, finding blood in the boot. During the fireworks, Hugh’s body is found floating in a shallow pond, and later identified by Hugh’s son Adam, and unwillingly, Colleen. Det. Rachel Kennedy, Kevin’s ex and Ivy’s mother, returns to investigate Hugh’s murder, and informs Miki she deems her a prime suspect until other evidence surfaces. Miki later finds a bloodied cow head dropped on her brother’s doorstep.
