Thana… could turn out to be an enviable spot in Tollywood’s filmi journey.There was Ajit Gangopadhyay’s play, Thana Theke Aaschi and Hiren Nag’s Uttam-Madhabi starrer by the same name, much before Saron Datta tread similar grounds with his version of Thana…The task was daunting for Saron. More so, because both the play and Nag’s film were hugely popular and well-appreciated. But, Saron, emerges a winner in his interpretation of the same. Referring to Ajit in the opening credits, Saron sticks to the plot in his treatment of the subject. Only this time around, he contemporises it in order to suit the times. A wet evening with the sky opening its flood gates, a dimly lit tea stall, music wafting in the air and the camera panning to an almost dark room with a figure looking outside the window. The lost look in her eyes, the stagger in her steps and then her picking up a blade from a drawer — the director sets the stage for Sandhya Mondal’s (Paoli) suicide — conveying successfully the plight of one who has fought and lost. Interestingly, Datta juxtaposes the depression of Sandhya with the festivities of their daughter’s engagement at Amarnath Mallick’s (Dulal) household.

Even as a life is snuffed out in the confines of a slum, the Mallick bari members sit down to discuss the menu for the wedding. It is then that Tinkari Halder (Sabyasachi) announces his “thana theke aaschi” entry. From then on it’s Sandhya’s diary that becomes the principal character in unraveling each of the five family members’ association with Sandhya urf Reba urf Sapna urf Sonali.While Datta had a strong script to take his audiences through a tale well-spersed with romance, sex and edge-of-the-seat thrill.
