We often say — ‘Good things are seldom repeated’ and if they happen to be Tagore’s creations, it’s unfair to even expect anyone to measure up to it.The first thing that strikes you while the opening credits roll is that if Amit Ray and Labanya Dutta from Tagore’s Shesher Kabita are to meet after decades, what’s the period the director and scriptwriter is looking at. From the several references to present-day social scenarios like Facebook, multi-storey buildings and smartphones, it appears that the film is set in 2019. So, youngsters of 1929 (publication year of Shesher Kabita) are logically and fictionally no more. Why the opening credits are important is because the title says — ‘Inspired from Tagore’s Shesher Kabita’ and a tagline reads ‘The unsaid part of the poem’.

The story not only takes an improbable leap of years but a huge leap of faith. Now, Amit (Soumitra Chatterjee) and Labanya (Mamata Shankar) not only meet at an old-age home but are reliving their youth through a young love blossoming between Soumitra’s friend’s daughter, Kuhu (Durga Santra) and Labanya’s late brother’s son, Akash (Aarna Mukhopadhyay). With this introduction, the director tries to answer if all such great love stories meet with ill fate? But probably all modern-day love connections are not as frivolous as they portray in the film.Amit and Labanya, on the contrary, are more real in keeping the sincerity of the relationship intact even after decades. Iconic actors like Soumitra Chatterjee and Mamata Shankar make things easier for the director, along with good support from Kharaj Mukherjee, Krishnakishor Mukhopadhyay, Pallavi Chatterjee and others.
