Originally titled Las leyes de la frontera (The Laws of the Frontier) after the 2012 novel it’s based on, Outlaws follows the exploits of a close-knit group of petty criminals in 1978 Catalonia, Spain, and the impressionable young man who joins their crew. Outlaws draws on the Spanish Quinqui genre, a ‘70s-era offshoot of the French New Wave that focused on young criminals, fast living, and dangerous romance.It’s 1978, and Ignacio “Nacho” Canas (Marcos Ruiz) walks the streets of Girona, his Catalonian home town, with a target on his back. But it’s over the flippers and pinging lights of “Buck Rogers” that Nacho first meets Tere (Begoña Vargas) and El Zarco (Chechu Salgado), and his life is never the same. Tere, flirty and confident to a fault, and Zarco, oozing an easygoing charm and rogue spirit, are like wild stallions to Nacho — they smoke dope in the square, hang out in red light district bars, and are basically nothing like his square mom, dad, and sister at home. Zarco and Tere are also the ringleaders of a ragtag band of petty criminals, and before long Nacho has joined them as they steal cars, knock over suburban homes for silver and jewelry, and pull off a series of pharmacy robberies that supply them with amphetamines to sell to hippies at street value.Nacho is emboldened by the thrill of robbing just to spend the profits on booze, smokes, and nightlife. He’s also imbued with a new sense of confidence. Zarco and Tere and the others accept him, respect him — it’s not something he’s felt before. As his participation in the gang’s jobs becomes more pronounced, the gang’s activities are also noticed by two police inspectors, and they begin circling the group as plans are made for an even bigger series of heists. Nacho also grows closer to Tere, even as her relationship with Zarco seems to take precedence.
