With Malli Modalaindi, TG Keerthi Kumar tries to subvert the usual rom-com tropes by making the story revolve around a protagonist who is supposedly flawed and has already gone through a failed relationship. But in a bid to tell a unique and relatable tale, he ends up caving in to the very tropes he tried to avoid – telling a tale so cliché it makes you yawn with the banality of it all.

Vikram (Sumanth) is a chef who has grown up surrounded by strong, independent women. Be it his widowed grandma (Annapoorna) or single mother (Suhasini), the former of whom always worries he’ll turn out just like his womanising grandfather, he’s surrounded by those who speak their mind. His best friend is also a girl, a food blogger called Vaishali, who harbours feelings for him (cliché, but okay) even if he feels only platonically. He is married to Nisha (Varshini Sounderajan) but it’s clear the couple has nothing keeping them together anymore except for a piece of paper. A mutual divorce here and a casual flirtation there later, Vikram finds himself attracted to Nisha’s divorce lawyer Pavitra (Naina Ganguly). What was supposed to be a clean slate and a fresh beginning soon finds him at square one.Keerthi does a good job at delving into how life after marriage seems more painful to people around the couple than the couple themselves. Grandmothers wail that Vikram is a divorced man, neighbouring women gossip that his wife has left him (no, she has divorced him – corrects one of them), fathers don’t want someone divorced as a husband for their beloved daughters – it’s a list we know all too well. Not to mention, he’s constantly reminded of his age.
