Riley, who is new in town, tries out for the cheer squad, but as her changes get better, she notices some cheerleaders are suspiciously expelled or injured, and she wonders if her stepmom is doing whatever it takes to get her on the team.The film follows Riley, a high school junior who recently moved to a new town with her dad and new stepmom, Amanda. In an attempt to make friends, Riley tries out for the school cheerleading squad and is in tight competition with the other girls in her grade. Texas — It was January 31, 1991, when the news of a Channelview mother arrested for hiring a hit man in an effort to land her daughter a spot on the cheerleading squad shocked the Houston community.Wanda Holloway, 37, was charged with trying to hire a man to kill the mother of her daughter’s cheerleading rival.The intended victim was Verna Heath, the mother of Amber Heath. Amber had been a cheerleader at Alice Johnson Jr. High School. According to police, Holloway apparently thought if Amber’s mother was killed, she would be too distraught to try out for cheerleader, making it easier for Holloway’s daughter Shanna to make the squad.

Holloway had an intense desire for her daughter Shanna to be a cheerleader. In 1991, when Shanna narrowly missed out on a spot on her junior high school squad, Holloway asked her ex-brother-in-law, Terry Harper, to hire a hitman to kill Verna Heath, mother of the 14-year-old girl who had beaten her into the squad. Holloway believed that Heath’s daughter would be so devastated by her mother’s death that she would drop out of the cheerleading team, thereby giving the spot to Shanna.However, unknown to Holloway, Harper had gone straight to the police after Holloway approached him; she was arrested the next day.
