StoryLine:

Kabir, touted as the first-ever Bengali film to have raised its standards to be on a par with big-budget Bollywood projects, seems to have got it all wrong as far as good cinema dealing with a serious topic like terrorism is concerned. The film tries to talk about the global issue, focusing on two individuals whose paths happen to cross. There are twists and turns, shocks and surprises — or so the director would like us to believe. But some oddities at the beginning are bound to throw you off course. Yasmin commutes in public transport around the blast areas, but remains unusually unperturbed through the chaos. There are some scenes that try to blindfold the audience into believing that Abir is flirting with Yasmin, just as a young man would behave with a beautiful co-passenger on a train. But you will see right through his intention. So much so that you will also know that it is a weak attempt at camouflaging the true identities of the characters, which is supposed to be a big, shocking revelation later. Promoted as an action-thriller with dollops of drama, Kabir fails to thrill the audience and neither are there such action scenes that it merits the genre tag. There’s just the regular police-terrorist fight, which is a gunfight to be precise, and is a far cry from what war films in Bollywood are like. What will hold your attention a little more than counting flaws is the efforts of some actors. Arna Mukhopadhyay and Shataf Figar play terrorists. With limited screen time, Arna does a believable job and Shataf is sincere in his depiction.
