Principal photography began in October 2021 on the occasion of Dussehra.[5] The filming was wrapped up on 16 July 2022.[6] The film was released in theaters on 7 April 2023.[7] The film underperformed commercially, becoming a box-office bomb.[8][9]In Gumraah (2023), the police face a conundrum when they capture two men with identical faces for the same murder. Aditya Roy Kapur plays both suspects in his first double role. The film begins with a brutal murder, and leads up to the capture of the two men, leaving both the audience and the police trying to determine who the real killer is. Directed by Vardhan Ketkar and starring Mrunal Thakur as Shivani Mathur, the film is a remake of the Tamil film Thadam (2019). The story is inspired by true cases from countries like Malaysia, US, the UK, and Germany. As the police try to solve the case, Shivani and her superior, ACP Dhiren Yadav (Ronit Roy), have different agendas and theories. The film takes a turn into the past lives of the suspects, Arjun Sehgal and Sooraj Rana, explaining how they got to the night of the murder. While Arjun’s romance with Janhvi (Vedika) is introduced, Sooraj’s side track of a robbery gone wrong with his friend Chaddi (Deepak Kalra) is also explored.
The film also falls back on the typical Bollywood formula of having a few songs thrown in, and unfortunately, they don’t add much to the overall narrative. However, the performances of the cast are noteworthy, with Aditya Roy Kapur doing a decent job in both of his roles, though it’s not quite on par with his previous performances in films like Malang (2020) and Aashiqui 2 (2013). Mrunal Thakur, as the determined police officer, manages to hold her own in a mostly male-dominated cast, while Ronit Roy brings his signature intensity to his role as the senior cop.
