Review: As its name suggests, director Agnideb Chatterjee’s Gaheen Hriday is a film that seeks to reveal the deepest corners of the human mind, and, especially, the heart. Largely inspired by the late Suchitra Bhattacharya’s popular novel of the same name, the storyline is predictable, but not boring. The monochromatic theme is something that is being explored in a mainstream film after a while, but doesn’t really add to the cinematic experience.Apart from that, there are also dramatic sequences that are shot in vivid colour. These sequences are an attempt to reveal the innermost and darkest shades of the three protagonists. But alas, they fall flat as it may not appear clear as to what is happening at first viewing. They are obviously meant to convey a message, but one wonders if words aren’t enough for that. But more on that later.

The film begins with Sohini (Rituparna Sengupta) complaining to her colleague about the typical Bengali middle-class nature of her husband Bhaskar (Debshankar Halder). “He has no fire,” Sohini says. These establishing shots are interspersed with scenes of Sohini and her lover (Kaushik Sen) on the throes of passion. She seems to suggest she is justified in her choice of having an affair as Bhaskar pays her no attention and takes her for granted, secure in the false knowledge that they are happily married and have a son together. He idles his time at home, mostly watching the news on TV and is blissfully unaware of his wife’s discontent.
