Tagore’s Ghare Baire too shows the conflict between the western and Indian philosophies. Our director today gives it a modern twist by making the crisis contemporary. Once a Maoist sympathiser and now a rightist politician, Sandip asks liberal journalist Nikhilesh: “Aam janata ki secularism mene neye?” and goes on explaining that it doesn’t matter what he believes in. Rather, according to Sandip, it is important to understand what is necessary to believe in this time. Through the dialogues, the director has carefully created Sandip’s character as a manipulative politician. Nikhilesh, meanwhile, represents the liberal, secular voice that most of the urban intelligentsia likes to hear in a bigoted society.At the same time, the film is also about Brinda’s (aka Bimala, played by Tuhina Das) love — first for her husband, Nikhilesh, and later, for her lover, Sandip.
