One day earlier, guitar technician Beth discovers she is pregnant and visits her sister, single mother Ellie, in her Los Angeles apartment complex, along with Ellie’s children Danny, Bridget and Kassie. When the children run to get pizza, an earthquake suddenly hits the building and creates a massive hole in the parking lot. Danny investigates the hole, and discovers an underground chamber containing multiple religious artifacts, along with three phonograph records and a strange book that he takes up to his room. The records reveal the book to be the third volume of the Naturom Demonto, formerly researched by priests in secret, who were turned down by the church for doing so.

Despite protests,the recording of the priest recites the incantations within the book, unleashing the Deadites, cutting the power to the entire building, as Ellie is possessed in the elevator. Ellie returns to the apartment in a trance where she menacingly threatens the family before her body contorts and she excessively vomits. In her final remaining throes of humanity, she pleads with Beth to protect her children before collapsing.Assuming her to be dead, Beth, alongside neighbors Gabriel and Mr. Fonda, lay Ellie to rest in her bedroom, before she awakens as a Deadite and attacks the family, wounding Bridget.
